The Sperm and the Egg

As you sit here reading this devotion, I doubt you questioned your existence.  Oh yes, you may feel groggy and not actually alive if you are reading before the sun rises.  Or if the sun has gone to bed and you remain a bit weary, you may feel the absence of life.  However, if called upon to make a statement regarding your physical being, you would have to declare that you are alive.

Let’s go before today’s point on the timeline of your life.  Before is actually the reality of life prior to existence. In order to plunge to these depths, we will need a simple refresher course in reproduction.

The life of a human being requires one sperm and one egg.  Sperm by themselves do not produce life, and an egg by itself does not produce life.  Physical life begins when the sperm and egg come together.  In fact, the actual implantation of a sperm within an egg is miraculous.  Many don’t recognize this truth, and others go as far as to ignore this truth altogether, aborting life before it is born; however, the creation of life is something that only God can do—a miracle.

As “two become one”, there is potential for the two (sperm and egg) to become one, and new life is formed.  There is no coincidence involved with physical life nor is it upon man’s command.  God creates and ordains life, and planned it before time began.  This marvel is called predestination.  God pre (before existence) destines (to ordain beforehand) our destiny.

There may be someone out there who would like to attribute the miracle of life to the control of man, but I doubt anyone would claim that they themselves thought about seeking to unite with an egg or a sperm while in the depths of another in order to bring about their very own existence.  That idea is absurd – ludicrous! Before your life began – you were dead, separated from life, and dead is dead!  There is no life in dead, any ability to think, reason, control, or call to life a human being from the absence of any substance.
