For the purpose of illustrating a spiritual point, let’s think some more about sperm and eggs. They say that millions of sperm are released at one time…millions! And, eggs are released on a regular, monthly basis as well. More often than not, the millions of sperm do NOT unite with the cyclical eggs. Because of this, those sperm and eggs experience death rather than life. Again, unless you are one who has tried over and over again to reproduce life, the loss of so many sperm and eggs is not something statistics show or we shed tears over. Physical life is so every day that until now you may not have even taken time to think about how many potential lives were cut short because all of those sperm that did not connect with the eggs. It would be crazy to mourn their loss just because they were not chosen for life. God is Sovereign Creator, and He calls into physical existence those whom He has chosen.
In the same way – predestination brings us to this identical place of sovereignty. The comfortable side of this thought is that God has chosen, or elected, some for spiritual life before they had a physical birth. It might be stretching to think about the mystery of it all, but we can wrestle with it and then nestle into God’s arms of dominion and control. We might even see this under the blanket of His great grace and love.
The other side of election, conversely, may feel dark. We fight against the mystery because this place does feel so . . . sovereign, leaving us out of control. No longer are there only “whosoever’s” who were called to believe in Him, but there also must be some “who-so-aren’ts”! Ahhhhhhhh . . . surely God wouldn’t destine one to be a who-so-aren’t? What about the promise for the who-so-evers? Well, the truth is that a who-so-aren’t can become a who-so-ever the minute they call upon the name of the Lord, BUT – this point of salvation came before time and began with God’s choosing. I know . . . a true mystery indeed.
“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you . . . I have chosen you out of the world...” John 15:16, 19
"He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself." Ephesians 1:4-5
"But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth." 1 Thessalonians 2:13
"So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." Colossians 3:12
No one can truly fathom God’s sovereignty and the idea of election. No one! The apostle Paul even rested in knowing that the whole mystery would not be revealed until the end when he declared in Romans 11:
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and His ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been His counselor? Or who hath first given to Him, and it shall be recompensed unto Him again? For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.” Romans 11:33-36
It all takes T.I.M.E. ~ Trusting In the Mystery of Eternity. We have to hold onto the reins that God is good, righteous, and just, and His ways are higher than ours.
Remembering the dead sperm and eggs might help. Since no one wonders about those unelected organisms, or feels that they were treated unfairly in the world of physical life, perhaps we can find peace at the same place in the spiritual realm. God knows the people who need Jesus (eggs) in whom He will plant His Word (sperm) to bring forth new creations in Christ. Because we are not Sovereign God with the roll-call of His predestined in our hands, we must continue with attempts to unite sperm with egg by sharing the Gospel, trusting that God will do what only He can do—perform the miracle of spiritual life! We can trust Him beyond our comprehension, my friend.
